There's the pixie, there's the bob—and then there's that elusive in-between haircut like Emma Stone's, causing everyone to text their stylists like mad. Enter: the pixie-bob. As you may have guessed, it's named as such because it's a cross between the cropped pixie and slightly longer bob, and you may also see it called a "bixie."

But what could be considered an awkward mid-length actually looks incredibly cool when it's done intentionally. "It’s short, chic, and full of personality, with the softness of a pixie and the structure of a bob," celebrity hairstylist Dimitris Giannetos. "It’s stylish, low-maintenance, and gives instant shape and movement. I love it because it feels strong and feminine at the same time.”

So what makes a haircut a pixie bob, as opposed to either a pixie or a bob? "A pixie bob typically hits around the cheekbones or just below the ears," says Giannetos. Like all short cuts, it puts the focus on the face. "It’s designed to highlight facial features and can be customized depending on your face shape," he says. "Keeping a little length in the front gives a softer, more romantic feel, while a shorter back adds a modern edge.”
