Do Hair Growth Serums Actually Work? Dermatologists Explain What to Expect

Hair growth serums are everywhere right now—from dermatologists’ offices to TikTok feeds—each promising thicker, fuller, and healthier-looking hair. But with so many formulas on the market, it can be difficult to tell which ones actually deliver results and which simply offer a temporary surface-level sheen.
According to experts, the truth lies somewhere in between. While some serums can support real hair growth, many are designed primarily to improve scalp health or protect the hair you already have. “Depending on the active ingredients and over a very long period of time, they could increase the duration of the hair growth cycle to boost density and thickness of the hair,” explains Alexis Young, MD, an assistant professor at Columbia University Medical Center.
“As consumers increasingly treat their scalp like skincare, brands are responding with more targeted, science-driven formulas designed to support the follicle environment and overall hair density,” says Rick Presti, associate director of hair and scalp R&D at Neutrogena. Certified trichologist Penny James adds that growing awareness around hair loss has made people more proactive about scalp health rather than quick cosmetic fixes.
Still, experts emphasize patience and keeping expectations realistic. “Hair growth is a slow biological process, and results take time. With the right ingredients and consistent use, a well-chosen hair growth serum can play a meaningful role in a healthy hair routine,” says Dr. Young.
